In a tightly contested battle during the first round of the SSAC Conference Tournament, the Brewton-Parker College Lady Barons basketball team were edged out by the Tennessee Southern Firehawks with a final score of 68-63. The game occurred on February 27, 2025, at the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl, kicking off the postseason and ending the postseason journey for the Lady Barons.
From the onset, Chasity Degale spearheaded the Brewton-Parker offense, finishing as the game's top scorer with 21 points and leading the rebounding with 12 boards. Despite her standout performance, the Lady Barons couldn't maintain the momentum initiated by Degale's early layup and a 3-pointer from Sydney Beasley. Tennessee Southern quickly responded, gaining an 11-point lead at one stage in the first quarter.
As the game progressed, Brewton-Parker's struggle continued despite efforts to close the gap. Significant contributions were made by Andranique Stewart, who not only scored 12 points but also grabbed 10 rebounds. Destanee Wright also had a notable performance, with seven assists and three steals. However, Tennessee Southern's defense tightened, preventing the Lady Barons from seizing control of the game.
Despite the loss, Head Coach Steve Edwards remained optimistic about his team's performance and future, stating, 'We definitely didn't expect this result today. I'm proud of our group's fight. We normally play deeper into the tournament but couldn't get it done. It's really tough to win in the postseason. This group was able to finish tied for 2nd in the regular season. They also gave us another winning season. While those things are good, we expect to play for championships. That's the expectation. We love our young core, and we are excited for the group of recruits that we will sign this offseason.'
Brewton-Parker will focus on the offseason and recruitment as they prepare for the next season. The Lady Barons wrap up their campaign with a record of 15-13 overall and 11-5 in conference play.
