VHS Wins Region Championship VHS Wins Region Championship

The Vidalia High School Indians took three games from the #7 ranked Yellow Jackets of Jeff Davis last week. And with losses from Bacon County, the Indians wrapped up the Region Championship and will host in the first two rounds of the State Playoffs.

Game 1

The first game of the series was a pitching dual with Landry Mead for the Indians throwing a shutout.

Over the first four innings of the game the score remained at 0-0, but in the top of the fifth inning the Indians finally got something working. With one runner on base, Mead hit a shot down the right field line that brought in a run and put the Indians on top 1-0. That was followed by a hit by Bryson Whited that scored Mead for a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth inning Walker Moncus made two solid plays at third base as the Indians kept their 2-0 lead. In the seventh inning the Indians defense again came up big as they held on to win the game 2-0.

Game 2

On Wednesday the Indians hosted Jeff Davis, and Caden Spivey was on the mound. He shut down JD in the top of the first inning, and in the bottom of the frame Mead led off with a double. Whited laid down a good bunt to put runners at the corners, and then Ty Dalley hit into a fielder's choice that brought in Mead for a 1-0 lead.

After a fielder's choice by Hughes Graham, Moncus came to the plate and hit a chopper up the middle to put runners at the corners. Jordan Walden walked to load the bases, and then a walk to Michael Blount made it 2-0, VHS.

The Jackets scored a run on an infield hit in the top of the second inning to close the lead to 2-1. Neither team scored over the next couple of innings, but in the bottom of the fifth the Indians plated three more runs.

With two runners on base Tucker Coleman came through with an RBI single for a 3-1 lead. Cason Banks walked, and then on a hit by Mead, Banks was rounding third and was tripped, interferance was called and he was awarded home for a 4-1 lead for the Indians. Whited added a double that brought in a run for a 5-1 lead.

Jeff Davis made it interesting in the top of the seventh inning as they put three hits together to close the lead to 5-3. The Indians got the next few outs and closed out the game, holding on to the 5-3 win.

Game 3

At Jeff Davis on Friday things went in a very different direction as the Indians racked up 17 hits on the way to a run rule win over the Jackets.

In the top of the second inning the Indians had runners on second and third with Mead coming to bat. He came through with a 2 RBI double for a 3-0 lead. Then Whited added a triple for a 4-0 lead. Then a hit and an error by Graham gave VHS a 5-0 lead. Spivey added a double in the top of the third and was hit in with an RBI single by Banks. Mead drove in Banks with a triple, and Dalley drove in a run to make it 8-0 heading to the bottom of the third inning.

In the top of the fifth inning with the bases loaded Graham, Moncus, and Walden all had RBI singles as the Indians pushed their lead to 11-0. VHS didn't allow the Jackets to score in the bottom of the fifth inning as they took the win, 11-0.

This week the Indians will close out the Region schedule with a series with Bacon County. The first game was on Tuesday after presstime. They will play on Thursday in Alma at 6:00 p.m. and then on Friday in Vidalia at 5:45 p.m. VHS will then play against Calvary Day on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in Grayson Stadium in Savannah in their final game of the regular season.
