Crusaders Over Twiggs

The Robert Toombs Christian Academy Crusaders basketball teams closed out the regular season last Friday on the road at Twiggs Academy in Jeffersonville. The Crusaders both came away with wins on the night.

Girls vs. Twiggs

RTCA led 5-0 early, but a three-pointer from Twiggs closed it to 5-3 with two minutes left in the first period. Rachel Threlkeld made it 6-3, and at the end of the first period it was 6-5 with RTCA on top. In the second Twiggs took the lead, 8-7, but Morgan Newsome put RTCA back up 9-8 with 5:45 left in the half. Ellie Graham hit a basket to make it 11-8. It was 16-10 after a three-pointer by Threlkeld, and then a basket by Ansley Akins gave RTCA a 18-10 lead at halftime.

Meridith Durden pushed that lead to 26-10 halfway through the third period, and neither did any more over the rest of the third. Heading to the fourth the score was 26-10 with RTCA on top.

With 6:04 left it was 29-10, and then a three from Twiggs made it 29-13. RTCA pushed that lead to 34-16, and they went on to win the game by that score.

The Lady Crusaders were led by Threlkeld and Durden each with 8 points.

Boys vs. Twiggs

In the boys game the Crusaders took a bit to get the offense going as they trailed 17-12 at the end of the first period. Early in the second Clayton Meadows tied the game at 17-17 with a three-pointer, and with 5:20 left in the half it was 19-19. Tyler Buggs put RTCA up and they pushed that lead to 26-22. MK McBride added a three, and then he hit one in the lane for a 32-26 Crusader lead. At the end of the first half the score was 35-26 as RTCA was beginning to pull away.

Early in the second half they closed the lead to 35-29, and then made it 37-32. Jashaun Powell hit two shots as RTCA held onto their lead. It was 41-34 after another basket by McBride, and at the end of the third period RTCA was on top 54-45. In the fourth the Crusaders went on a run as they extended their lead to 61-45, and they went on to win the game 83-55. RTCA was led by Mc- Bride with 26 points. This week RTCA will host the Region Tournament. The RTCA boys played First Presbyterian Christian Academy on Tuesday after presstime, and will be back in action on Thursday with time TBA. The girls will play for the Region Championship against Twiggs on Thursday with the time TBA. RTCA and Twiggs are the only two schools in the Region with girls teams.
