The City of Mount Vernon has announced fourteen streets that will be resurfaced over the summer as a part of the area’s Transportation Investment Act (TIA) project.

On March 19, the City of Mount Vernon received bids for the resurfacing of fourteen streets within the City’s limits. A contract has been awarded to the Georgia Asphalt Producers Inc. — the lowest bidder — in the amount of $653,574.85.

The project is funded through the 2010 Transportation Investment Act (TIA), which created twelve special districts of the State and authorized elections to be held in each special district which would allow each district independently or any other district to approve and authorize the imposition of a special district transportation sales and use tax to fund transportation projects within the special district, of which the City of Mount Vernon joined though a citizen approval through a referendum. Voters initially approved the first ten-year TIA term in 2013. Voters again approved the second TIA term in 2023.

The Georgia Department of Transportation manages the projects, while the Georgia Department of Revenue and the Georgia State Financing and Investment Commission handle the funds, and regional Citizen Review Panels oversee the progress.

The following fourteen streets were selected by the City and will be paved during summer 2026: E. Days Street, E. Edwards Street, N. Minnie Street, E. Pearl Street, Lewis Street, E. Folsom Street, E. Connell Street, E. Palmer Street, W. McRae Drive, E. Mount Vernon Street, W. Mount Vernon Street, S. Railroad Avenue, E. Jefferson Street, and N. Walker Street.

Two additional streets — W. Elizabeth Street and Gillis Street — will also be resurfaced for $56,544, and is funded through the 2026 Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant (LMIG).

The exact resurfacing schedule has not been released. For more information, call (912) 583-2323.
