Indians Shut Out By Bears

The Vidalia High School Indians football team fell to the Bears of Pierce County last Friday night in Blackshear, dropping a 21-0 decision in a tough road matchup. The Indians struggled to find an offensive rhythm against a stingy Bears defense, despite a few promising drives.

The game remained a defensive battle through the first quarter, with both teams trading punts and neither finding the scoreboard. The deadlock finally broke early in the second quarter when Pierce County found the endzone, capping a drive that included a long pass, and punched in a rushing touchdown to take a 7-0 lead after the successful point-after attempt. Vidalia looked poised to answer just before the half. Following the kickoff, a long run by DJ Wallace moved the Indians into Bears territory. However, the drive stalled at the Pierce County 49-yard line, and the Indians were forced to punt, heading into halftime trailing 7-0.

The third quarter saw the Bears extend their lead. Pierce County broke free for a 7-yard rushing touchdown midway through the quarter, pushing the score to 14-0.

Later in the third, the Indians mounted their biggest threat of the night. A nice run by Marquis Harvey brought Vidalia all the way down to the Bears' 6-yard line. Unfortunately, the drive was cut short on a heart-breaking play when Pierce County recovered a fumble, squashing the scoring opportunity and regaining possession.

The fourth quarter sealed the game for the Bears. Following a turnover on downs, Pierce County drove down the field, and scored on a 31yard run. That pushed the score to 21-0. The Bears held on from there to take the win over the Indians.

While the Indians' defense held tough for stretches against a quality opponent, the team’s offense was unable to put points on the board, leading to the shutout loss. The team will look to learn from this tough defeat as they continue through their schedule.

VHS has this week off and will be back in action next Friday when they host Savannah Christian at 7:30 p.m.
