Portions of Old Water Tank Road and Hilton Memory Road were closed for several hours in Montgomery County on Sunday, July 6, as freight train cars derailed at the roads’ intersections.

The train was traveling eastbound on the Georgia Central Railroad in the Northern area of Montgomery County on Sunday evening, when two of the freight containers at the end of the train derailed, rendering the vehicle unable to continue moving. No one was injured in the crash and no hazardous materials were onboard the train at the time of the incident.

The Montgomery County Emergency Management Agency alerted citizens about the crash at around 7 p.m. on Sunday night, as they encouraged all people to avoid the area.

State railroad officials and local law enforcement officers responded to the derailment, as they remained at the scene to investigate the incident. The exact cause of the derailment has not been disclosed.
