Montgomery County Public Library patrons have had the opportunity to meet and build a relationship with new Library Manager Kelly Stephens this summer, as she has offered numerous activities daily to get the community involved with library programming.

Stephens became the library’s manager at the end of May, after the opportunity became available through a vacancy. Having moved to the area in 2013, she never expected to work in the local library, but said that she feels it was fate.

“It was really quick; it was really fast. I wasn’t really looking for a job – it was one of those things where it was kind of meant to be,” she explained. “I have some training with the state library of Virginia. In my background, I used to be a records manager for a couple different police departments. So, I have around 15 years of experience dealing with the public and releasing of information.”

Yet, Stephens’s true passion is children, as she shared that she had waited 17 years in her personal life to be able to raise her own child. “In this new endeavor, I am excited for working with the kids – that’s my passion. I always wanted to have kids, and finally had my miracle child after 17 years. I do a lot of things for her, and I can’t wait to try to create and get more programs here for kids in the community,” she shared.

When asked her goal in leading the library, Stevens said that she hopes to create an atmosphere of unity and acceptance at the facility. “To me, a library is for the community, and I want to make sure everyone knows that they are welcome here,” she emphasized.

The Montgomery County Public Library is located at 215 S. Railroad Avenue in Mt. Vernon, and is open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Monday through Thursday, and from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday. For more information about the library or upcoming events, call (912) 583-2780.
