WHEELER WOODS FIRE — Fire crews battled a woods fire Monday, April 14, off of St. Paul’s Church Road in the southern end of Wheeler County. GEMA Director and Springhill Volunteer Fire Chief Steve Adams said the fire started from a debris burn on private property and spread to adjacent land. The blaze, which burned about 75 acres, jumped the highway several times, but firefighters were able to protect a nearby church and other structures. Adams said Georgia Forestry had multiple units and heavy equipment on site in an effort to control the fire. Fire crews were called out around 4:30 p.m. and were on the scene late into the night.
