Heritage Sweeps Covenant

The Vidalia Heritage Academy Eagles baseball team played in the first round of the GIAA State Baseball Playoffs last week against Covenant Academy's Rams. VHA swept the best-of-three series.

Game 1

In the first game of the series, the Rams got on the board first with two runs in the top of the first inning. VHA came back with two in the bottom half of the frame to tie the game, but the Rams added two more in the top of the second inning hold a 4-2 lead.

Heritage jumped out in front with four runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 6-4 lead. VHA plated two more runs in the fourth inning to push their lead to 8-4.

The Eagles defense held over the next three innings to take the win by that score, 8-4. Jake Adams and Pearson O'Neal each drove in three runs in the game to lead the way for Heritage. Trevor White got the win on the mound, with Maddyx Herrin coming in in relief the final two innings.

Game 2

VHA pulled away in the second game to win big. VHA plated two runs in the top of the first inning for the early lead, but the Rams scored one in the fourth to make it 2-1. VHA added a run in the top of the fifth inning, but the Rams answered in the bottom of the frame as VHA led 3-2.

VHA broke the game open in the top of the sixth inning with seven more runs, to take a 10-2 lead. The Rams did add three in the bottom of the sixth to close the gap to 10-5, but four more from the Eagles in the seventh pushed their lead to 14-5.

VHA held in the bottom of the seventh to take the win over the Rams, and to move on to the second round of the playoffs.

Heritage will take on Flint River in the second round. They will play a double header on Friday at Flint River beginning at 3:00 p.m. If necessary, they will play a third game on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
