Superior Court Judge Kaufold Passes Away

Oconee Judicial Circuit Superior Court Judge Howard C. Kaufold, Jr., passed away on Sunday, July 19. He was actively serving as the Superior Court Judge at the time of his death, and even oversaw cases within recent months.

Kaufold, a graduate of Mercer University’s Walter F. George School of Law, came to Vidalia in 1978, and served the area for almost forty years as a lawyer, representing Toombs County, Montgomery County, local banks, businesses, and farmers.

On December 21, 2017, Kaufold was appointed as a Superior Court Judge by former Governor Nathan Deal, and continued to serve on the bench even after receiving a pancreatic cancer diagnosis in 2021 and throughout battling the disease for almost five years.

Current Governor Brian Kemp commented on the loss. “Marty, the girls, and I share our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Judge Howard Kaufold, Jr. A man of integrity and enduring faith, I was proud to know him and to see his impact on the Oconee Circuit Superior Court. His courage and fight against cancer these last several years was inspiring, and his wife, Sherri, and their children remain in our prayers during this time of mourning,” he remarked.

He will be honored with a memorial ceremony at Brewton-Parker Christian University’s Saliba Chapel at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 22.
