Two People Airlifted at U.S. 1 Intersection

Two people were airlifted from the scene of a car accident at the intersection of U.S. Highway 1 and State Route 56 on Friday, July 17.

Janice Carter, 70, of Waycross, was driving south on U.S. Highway 1 in her 2015 Chevrolet Traverse around lunch on Friday, when she collided with a 2014 Nissan Frontier driven by Ashlyn Lee Michelle Odom, 18, of Lyons, who was going eastward on State Route 56. The vehicles hit on their fronts before Carter’s car spun 180 degrees and the cars collided again on the vehicles’ rears. Carter’s car traveled 150 feet after the collision, coming to a final uncontrolled rest while facing north, and Odom’s truck went 72 feet before coming to a final uncontrolled rest while also facing north.

According to the Georgia State Patrol’s preliminary investigation, troopers believe that Odom did not yield to Carter after Odom stopped at the stop sign at the intersection, as Odom told officers she believed that she had time to cross the intersection while Carter explained that Odom had pulled out in front of her.

Odom was taken to Memorial Health Meadows Hospital in Vidalia by ambulance, while her passenger Dallas Odom, 77, of Lyons, was flown to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah by AirEvac.

AirEvac also flew Carter to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, while her passengers – her 8-year-old and 4-year-old grandsons – were transported to Memorial Health Meadows Hospital by ambulance.
