Soperton Resident Questions Progress of City Park

During their regularly scheduled meeting on June 15, 2026, the Soperton City Council addressed several pending issues as well as considered a resident’s concerns about a local city park.
Soperton resident Phillip Philyaw addressed the council with his concerns about the lack of progress being made on the park located on Ball Park Drive, stating, “Based on what I have seen, the work seems to have stopped.”
Mayor John Koon responded that there have been some delays with subcontractors, stating, “They have had jobs ahead of ours.” However, he expects the work to be completed by mid or end of July. “We’re moving as fast as we can move with the resources we have,” Koon stated.
The Mayor continued, “The bottom line is we are not behind. We said we would be done by the middle of July. A major project like this doesn’t happen overnight. There’s a lot of things that go into it behind the scenes that people don’t see. It’s not because we are dragging our feet for any reason. Nobody has neglected anything. We’re doing what we can when we can, and it will be done in a timely fashion.”
The mayor added that barring bad weather and any other unforeseen delays, he expects the project to be completed by the middle of July as planned, with a ribbon cutting around the first of August.
In other business, the council appointed and approved Mary Carter and Sheila Coney to the Treutlen County Library Board. The council approved Hofstadter & Associates as the 2026 Community Development Block Grant engineering firm and the Association of Local Government Auditors for administrative and grant services.
The next Soperton City Council Meeting is scheduled for July 20, 2026, at 6:30 p.m., with the work session to begin at 5:30 p.m. As always, the public is encouraged to attend both meetings.
