Toombs County Track And Field Athletes Punch Tickets To Sectionals

The hard work put in during the spring season paid off in a big way for the Toombs County High School Bulldogs track and field teams. Competing in the Region Meet at Groves High School last week, the Bulldogs delivered strong performances across the board, securing several qualification spots for the next round of the postseason. For the athletes out of Lyons, the focus now shifts to Saturday, May 2, when they will travel to Bleckley County High School for the Sectional Meet to keep their state hopes alive.

In the field events, Toombs County established a steady presence, particularly in the throwing pit. RJ Langston and Dax Nobles both qualified in the boys' shot put, while Tanya Simpson earned her spot in the girls' shot put. Nick Frazier will also represent the Bulldogs in the discus. The jumping events saw equal success, with Justice Wilds qualifying in the high jump and Jaden Green punching his ticket in the long jump.

Out on the track, the Bulldogs showcased a solid mix of speed and endurance. Blake Gaffney led the way in the short sprints, advancing in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. In the hurdle events, Brandon Stevens qualified in both the 110-meter and 300-meter races. He will be joined by Landon Gaffney, who also advanced in the 300-meter hurdles. The distance runners did their jobs well, with Palmer Davis locking in his spots for the 3,200-meter and 800-meter runs, while Juan Luna advanced in the grueling 3,200-meter and 1,600-meter races.

The Toombs County relay teams also proved they have what it takes to compete at the next level. Both the 4×200 and 4×800 relay squads successfully navigated the region field to earn a trip to Bleckley County. The Bulldogs will rely on the combined efforts and clean handoffs of Deon Moore, Walker Bunch, Chase Becker, Moses Young, and the versatile Jaden Green to carry them through in the relay events next weekend.

With a deep roster of qualifiers heading into Sectionals, the Bulldogs have positioned themselves well for the next stage of the season. The coaching staff and athletes will have a few hard days of practice left before making the trip on Saturday, looking to push as many competitors as possible through to the State Meet.
