Higgston Fire Chief John McLendon rescued a woman who was trapped in her vehicle after a wreck on Saturday morning, March 21.

At 11:49 a.m. on March 21, Higgston Fire Department, Tarrytown Fire Department, and Georgia Department of Corrections – Montgomery State Prison Fire were dispatched to Taylor Springs Road, where a vehicle had wrecked into a creek beside the roadway.

Chief McLendon and one of the department’s captains were the first responders on the scene, and immediately assessed the situation, finding that the car was both on its side and with deployed airbags. They entered the creek to check on the vehicle’s driver, who remained trapped in the vehicle.

Responders worked to open the vehicle and safely rescue the driver. Chief McLendon carried her from the creek to the roadway, where she was medically evaluated.

The Higgston Fire Department later issued a statement about the rescue, saying, “We are incredibly grateful for the quick response and bravery shown by our first responders in ensuring a successful rescue. Without hesitation, our Chief and firefighters did not think twice about entering the creek to save this woman’s life. We would also like to thank Tarrytown Fire, Prison Fire, and Montgomery Toombs EMS for their assistance on scene. We are proud to serve and protect our community each and every day.”

The Department also urged drivers to remember to use caution while driving, especially near roadways with water hazards.
