TCHS Bulldogs Take 2-3


The Toombs County High School Bulldogs baseball team opened the week strong, securing victories over Burke County and Screven County before dropping their final matchup to the Emanuel County Institute. vs. Burke Co.
Toombs County opened their week with a 3-1 home victory over the Burke County Bears on Monday. Ty Hutchinson delivered a dominant performance on the mound for the Bulldogs, striking out 12 batters.
The Bulldogs struck first in the bottom of the third inning with a hit by Joseph Owens, followed by a sacrifice fly from Riley Kersey to take a 2-0 lead. Toombs plated an insurance run in the fourth inning to push the advantage to 3-0.
Burke County managed to score one run in the top of the fifth, but Hutchinson and the Bulldogs shut the door to secure the win. vs. Screven
On Wednesday, the Bulldogs relied on a potent offense to secure a 12-5 victory over the Screven County Gamecocks. Joseph Owens was perfect at the plate, collecting four hits in four at-bats, including a firstinning double and three singles, while stealing two bases.
Toombs County jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single by Lawton Toole to left field and a sacrifice fly by Brody Benton.
After Riley Kersey grounded out to score a run in the second, Screven County erupted for five runs in the bottom half of the inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Bryson Scott, taking a 5-3 lead.
The Bulldogs answered decisively in the fourth inning to regain control. Kersey delivered a two-run single, and Toole followed with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 7-5.
Kersey earned the complete- game win on the mound, allowing just three earned runs over seven innings while striking out eight and walking one.
Toole finished the night with three RBIs, and Nick Carroll added two hits to the Bulldogs' 11-hit total. Worth Brown took the loss for Screven County.
Head coach Derek James praised his team's resilience, stating, “Joseph had a big night at the plate, and Riley gave us a strong performance on the mound. We did a good job responding after they took the lead and kept the pressure on offensively.” vs. ECI
The week ended on a difficult note Thursday with a 6-0 road loss to the ECI Bulldogs. Toombs County's bats went quiet as ECI steadily built their lead.
ECI scored one run in the bottom of the second inning, added another in the fourth, and broke the game open with three runs in the fifth. They added a final run in the sixth inning to hand Toombs the shutout loss.
Looking Ahead
This week, Toombs County hosted Screven County on Monday after presstime. The Bulldogs will be back in action this Saturday as they travel to Athens to play Prince Avenue Christian at noon.
