Beekeepers and apiary enthusiasts gathered in Oak Park on Saturday, April 11, as the Altamaha Beekeepers Association hosted a Field Day event to help educate the community on the craft.
Over forty people attended the event, which instructed attendees about the basics of beekeeping. Topics included lighting smokers, inspecting hives, splitting hives, installing packages, marking queens, and more. Instructors even began to help beginning beekeepers to deepen their knowledge about apiary work, as they began teaching these individuals about grafting queen bees to help maintain a healthy hive.
The Association shared their gratitude to all volunteers who helped run the event, and to Vidalia Apicultural Services Managing Partner Heather Davis-Burton for donating a package of bees, which was installed in a hive that went home with attendee Josh Brown as a part of a giveaway.
The Association meets monthly to share tips and information on beekeeping. For more information, call (912) 212-6332.
