Farmers, agribusiness leaders, and community members came together to pray for rain at Lasseter Tractor Company on Thursday morning, April 23.
The event was led by farmers Chris Hopkins and Sam Baker, who said that they were inspired to come together and pray for rain after feeling stress about the current drought’s effect on dry land crops, as well as the current wildfires, which are being fueled by dry conditions, throughout the state.
“We know that the Vidalia Onion Festival [was this weekend] and many people don’t want rain for that – we understand that and respect it. We also know that this weather has been great for farmers who have been working to harvest onions. However, for several of us, we desperately need rain on the crops we are planting,” Hopkins continued from page
explained, as he shared his appreciation for all of the people who came together to pray.
Baker – who also serves as a pastor in Montgomery County – led the group in prayer, as they prayed for rain, relief and comfort for those affected by wildfires and the drought, and a safe festival.
It has been over a month since the region has had significant rainfall, as the U.S. Drought Monitor recently announced that almost all of the entire area of Toombs, Montgomery, Treutlen, and Wheeler Counties is considered to be in a “D4 level” exceptional drought.
Baker and Hopkins encouraged attendees to remain hopeful that rain would hydrate the area soon, as they reminded everyone to continue to pray for rain.
