The Altamaha Down Syndrome Society (ADSS) will host a Christmas Characters Meet and Greet event for the community from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday, November 30.
“This is just our way of connecting with the community and providing a sensory-friendly event where kids and families can interact with Santa and other Christmas characters to kick off the holidays,” Altamaha Down Syndrome Society Director Makaylee Randolph emphasized. “This event helps us to accomplish two of our missions: to create a warm, inviting, and understanding community for individuals with special needs and their families, and to give them the opportunity to experience fun things in an atmosphere in which they can thrive.”
During the event, individuals with special needs and their families and friends will be able to take photos with Santa Claus and other Christmas characters, complete Christmas crafts, write letters to Santa Claus, and enjoy fellowshipping with other families of individuals with special needs.
“This Christmas Characters Meet and Greet is not just for individuals with Down Syndrome,” Randolph clarified. “Our organization is named after Down Syndrome because the individuals that inspired us to create it do have Down Syndrome, but we serve families of individuals with all special needs, whether its Autism, Epilepsy, Cerebral Palsy, Tuberous Sclerosis Complex, Dravets Syndrome, etc. Everyone is welcome.”
The event is free, and will be held at the Mount Vernon Community House, located at 511 College Street in Mount Vernon. For more information, call or text Randolph at (912) 253-1447.
