Montgomery County 4-Hers traveled to the Toombs Ag Center on Thursday, November 6, to compete in the area Cotton Boll and Consumer Judging Contest, where many students placed both individually and as a team.

Cotton Boll and Consumer Judging is a competitive judging contest where 4-H’ers gain skills in making rational decisions when purchasing goods and services while maximizing resources. Competitors also learn about cotton as an agricultural commodity in our state and promote cotton through commercials or advertisements. The contest is divided into Junior (4th-8th Grades) and Senior Divisions (9th-12th Grades).

Montgomery County 4-H had a total of 18 students compete, as both a Junior and Senior Team sought to showcase their abilities. The County had so many students interested in participating in the project that the 4-H held a Montgomery County Cotton Boll and Consumer Judging Contest, and those who placed highest in the reasoning and commercials categories were selected to represent the county at the area contest.

The Senior Team – composed of Bryson Lockhart, Avimael Serrano, Tatum Williams, and Hartley Williamson – placed 5th out of 11 teams. Williamson was also among the Top 10 competitors in the Senior Division Reasoning and Presentation competitions. She also placed 6th overall out of 45 senior competitors.

The Junior Team – composed of Alice Braddy, Caleb Braddy, John Braddy, Joanna Davis, Macy Glisson, Ayla Hardeman, Addy McCoy, Fatima Momin, Maggie Palmer, Kylie Rogers, Leticia Serrano, Spencer Sharpton, Ava Spivey and Rhett Williamson – also placed 5th out of 11 teams. Several team members placed in the Individual Presentation division of the Junior competition: Alice Braddy was the top individual in the contest, as she earned a perfect score; Ayla Hardeman came in send place; Maggie Palmer placed 3rd, and John Braddy took 4th place.

Junior Team members who are still in Elementary School (4th-5th grades) competed against each other as individuals in the Cloverleaf competition. Addy McCoy won third place overall as an individual in this competition, and 3rd place in the Cloverleaf Placing and Reasons contest. Every Montgomery County 4-H Cloverleaf competitor placed in the division’s Individual Presentation Top 10, as Macy Glisson, Fatima Momin, and Rhett Williamson all tied for first place with perfect scores. Addy McCoy and Kylie Rogers tied in second place, Leticia Serrano placed thirs, Spencer Sharpton and Ava Spivey tied in fifth place, Caleb Braddy took sixth place, and Joanna Davis received ninth place.

Montgomery County 4-H Extension Employees Julie Waller and Lauren Stanley and Adult Volunteer Joyce Allen accompanied the students at the competition, and stated their pride of these club members and their accomplishments.
