Higgston Fire Department recently received the Georgia Forestry Commission 50/50 Grant, and used the funding to better equip firefighters for wildfires by purchasing new gear and tools.
The Georgia Forestry Commission 50/50 Grant helps fire departments get needed supplies to best serve their surrounding communities by providing half the funding for these purchases. Higgston Fire Department used this grant to buy turnout gear specifically designed to protect firefighters when dealing with wildfires and several tools, such as fire rakes, shovels, and axes.
These supplies will be immensely beneficial to the Department and the area, as dry weather has caused many brush fires and wildfires to spread throughout the county.
“This equipment will help us respond more safely and effectively while protecting our community,” Higgston Fire Chief John McLendon emphasized. “We are extremely thankful to the Georgia Forestry Commission for their continued support of departments like ours. We would also like to give a big thank you to Williams Fire Inc. for handling and getting all of the gear and tools to us. Opportunities like this make a big difference in keeping our firefighters prepared and our community safe.”
