The Lyons and Vidalia Recreation Departments sent their 8U girls to the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association (GRPA) District 1 Tournament last week, and it was the host team who ultimately walked away with the hardware. Played at Partin Park in Lyons from June 6 through June 9, the tournament concluded with the Lyons girls securing first place.

VRD Maroon vs. Rincon Vidalia Maroon opened the tournament with a narrow first-round victory over Rincon. It was a tight contest throughout, but Vidalia managed to hold off Rincon for a 15-12 win to advance. LRD vs. VRD Maroon

In the second round, Lyons, fresh off a firstround bye, met Vidalia Maroon and made quick work of their local rivals. Lyons exploded for 19 runs in the top of the first inning to put the game out of reach early. Vidalia managed two runs in the bottom half of the frame, but Lyons tacked on nine more in the second to secure a decisive 28-2 victory.

VRD Black vs. Effingham

Vidalia Black also started with a first-round bye, drawing Effingham County for their opener. Vidalia managed to strike first, pushing a run across in the top of the first inning. However, Effingham responded with a massive 21-run bottom half. Vidalia plated three runs in the second, but Effingham answered with three of their own to finish off a 24-4 run-rule win.

LRD vs. Effingham

The winners' bracket semifinal pitted Lyons against Effingham in what proved to be a tense, onerun battle. Lyons took early control, scoring two runs in both the first and second innings to build a 4-0 advantage.

Effingham woke up in the third, scoring four to tie it, and eventually grabbed a 6-4 lead heading into the top of the fifth. Lyons dug in, plating three crucial runs in the bottom of the fifth to retake the lead, 7-6. The Lyons defense held strong in the sixth to secure the win and punch their ticket to the Championship as the undefeated seed.

VRD Maroon vs. Emanuel Down in the losers' bracket, Vidalia Maroon faced Emanuel County in an elimination game. Emanuel controlled the contest from the start, shutting out Vidalia Maroon 20-0 and ending their tournament run. VRD Black vs. Rincon

Vidalia Black kept their hopes alive in the losers' bracket with a high-scoring 34-13 victory over Rincon. Vidalia jumped out to an 8-3 lead after the first inning and extended it to 14-6 after two. The game broke wide open in the third when Vidalia Black drove in 14 runs to make it 286. Rincon managed seven runs in the bottom of the third, but Vidalia capped the game with a six-run fourth inning to advance. VRD Black vs. Emanuel

In their next elimination round, Vidalia Black met a tough Emanuel County squad. Vidalia started strong, putting up eight runs in the top of the first, but Emanuel countered with 15 runs in the bottom of the frame and never looked back. Emanuel added eight more in the second to stretch their lead to 23-8. Both teams traded two runs in the third inning, ending the game by run rule at 25-10 and eliminating Vidalia Black. Effingham vs. Emanuel

The losers' bracket semifinal set up a matchup between Effingham and Emanuel. Effingham's offense proved too much, securing a 2113 win to advance and earn a rematch with Lyons for the title.

LRD vs. Effingham Championship Game 1 Facing elimination, Effingham needed to beat Lyons twice to claim the Championship, and they managed to take the first step in a hard-fought opening game. Lyons built an early 4-1 lead after two innings and stretched it to 6-2 in the third. Effingham chipped away, tying the game at 6-6 in the fourth and taking a 7-6 lead in the fifth. Lyons tied it up in the bottom of the fifth, but a late three-run surge by Effingham in the sixth sealed a 10-7 win, forcing a winner-take-all second game.

Game 2

In the final game of the Championship, Lyons showed their resilience to capture the title. Effingham grabbed early momentum with three runs in the top of the first, while Lyons managed just one in the bottom half. After cutting the deficit to 3-2 in the second, Lyons fell behind 5-2 when Effingham scored twice in the top of the third.

Needing an answer, Lyons responded with a four-run bottom of the third to take a 6-5 lead. They added four insurance runs in the fourth to make it 10-5, and the defense closed the door to secure the Championship.

With the District 1 title in hand, the Lyons girls now prepare to represent the area at the GRPA State Tournament. The state tournament kicks off this coming Tuesday in Dalton, GA
