Breaking Barriers, Building Dreams:

The Ladybugs – the area’s first ever Special Needs Cheerleading Team – is making history both on and off the competition mats, as they recently earned silver at the state competition.
The team was created in 2023 by Founder Elaine Allen and Coach Jessica Smith, who were working to create a new sport that would help to include all athletes to help meet accredidation goals. This new team quickly became a staple in the community and a meaningful program where athletes with disabilities could showcase their talents, build confidence, and experience the thrill of team competitions.
The Ladybugs team is made up of individuals of all ages with various disabilities, creating an inclusive environment where every athlete has the opportunity to participate, learn, and succeed. The group has become a source of joy and cheer within the community, as they have participated in parades and performed at events within the region.
On May 22, the team competed at the Special Olympics Georgia State Summer Games Cheerleading Competition at Emory University in Atlanta. The group went up against teams from across the state, and delivered an impressive and electrifying performance, as they took home second place in the Game Day Division.
The team's success reflects the dedication of its athletes, coaches Jessica Smith and Casandra Russell, families, and supporters. Beyond the medals, the Ladybugs continue to inspire others through their determination, teamwork, and positive spirit.
The team would also like to extend a special thank you to Dot Foods for the sponsorship, and Toombs County High School cheerleaders Bentlee Beasley and Natalie Moore, along with Coach Nikki Larsen, for their support, encouragement, and assistance. Their willingness to share their time and talents helped make a positive impact on the athletes and contributed to the team's success.
As the program continues to grow, the Ladybugs remain a shining example of inclusion and opportunity, proving that with encouragement and support, every athlete can achieve great things.
