Wheeler Falls To Montgomery
The Wheeler County Bulldogs baseball wrapped up their region schedule last week, dropping a tough pair of games to the Montgomery County Eagles. The home-and-away series saw the Bulldogs flash some early offense before Montgomery County’s bats pulled away in both contests.
Game 1
On Tuesday in Alamo, Wheeler struck first. In the bottom of the first inning, Rhett McCranie drove in two runs with an RBI single to give the Bulldogs an early lead. The Eagles responded with a run in the second and two more in the third to go up 3-2. Wheeler fought back in the bottom of the third, reclaiming the lead at 4-3 thanks to RBI hits from Landyn Horne and Riley Long.
The momentum shifted sharply in the top of the fourth inning. Montgomery County exploded for eight runs, putting the game out of reach. Wheeler managed a run in the bottom half of the inning, but the Eagles tacked on three more in the fifth to stretch their advantage to 14-5. Despite the Bulldogs showing some late life by pushing across two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh, Montgomery County matched them with a pair in the final frame to take a 16-9 victory.
Game 2
Friday’s road trip to Mt. Vernon proved even more difficult for Wheeler. The Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and kept the pressure on. Montgomery County added a run in the second and three more in the third to build a commanding 9-0 advantage.
After the Eagles plated two more in the fourth, the Bulldogs finally broke through in the top of the fifth, scoring three runs to cut the deficit to 11-3. Montgomery County answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth and closed out the scoring with one more in the sixth, handing Wheeler a 13-3 defeat.
The pair of losses brings Wheeler’s record to 6-14 on the season and finalizes their region mark at 5-7. The Bulldogs were scheduled to wrap up the regular season at home in Alamo against Tattnall County on Tuesday of this week, with results unavailable at presstime.
