Last Wednesday was a first for the Toombs County High School wreastling team. The team traveled to Brewton-Parker College to wrestle in the Rivalry Dual against the Vidalia Indians. The Rivalry Dual was not a first as the program began hosting this event at the beginning of Coach Allen’s tenure, but wrestling in conjunction with a college wrestling program was new for the program.

The Rivalry Dual consisted of a display of wrestling talents all across Toombs County, pitting the Toombs County Mat-Dawgs against the Vidalia Indians at each age group. The MatDawgs started off with 8 youth wrestling matches. The results weren’t what many had hoped, losing 7 of the 8 matches, but Coach Allen put the youth wrestling into perspective by saying, “The goal of our youth program is to build a love for wrestling, that often involves winning, and learning how to wrestle at a high level. It’s not to win every match we wrestle. Our little ones battled and honestly out wrestled each of their opponents. We just got caught in one move each match that kept us from winning those matches. That’s ok, the future is bright for the Toombs County MatDawgs.”

The youth wrestlers that took the mats for the MatDawgs were Barrett Pittman, Ace Brantley, Lincoln Dykes, Lincoln Towns, Maddox McDaniel, Luke Bateman, Jase Bateman, Roper Dixon. The shining star for the Mini-MatDawgs was Barrett Pittman earning a pin.

From that point forward, the night was owned by Toombs County. The Middle School MatDawgs displayed superior wrestling, winning all but 2 matches in their dual against the Vidalia Middle School team.

This winning trend did not stop there as TCHS closed the evening out in similar fashion only losing 2 matches wrestled. The final score was a win for the MatDawgs with a score of 72-16. The culminating match of the evening during the high school dual was the returning State Champion, Duece Hightower from Vidalia against the returning State Runner-Up, Lucas Coley from Toombs County. The match seemed like an even show down until a 2nd period scramble where Coley comes out on top and finds Hightower on his back to earn a pin for the MatDawgs.

The night ended with the Brewton-Parker Barons winning their dual against Truett-McConnell University. The highlight of the dual was one of Toombs County’s own, Gailan Wilds starting at the 165 lb. weight class for the Barons. Gailan earned a win to help his team go on to earn the victory.

This week, Toombs will take part in the Onion City Invitational at Vidalia High School on Friday and Saturday.
