BPC Takes 2 From Spartanburg

The Brewton-Parker College Lady Barons basketball team played two games against the Lady Pioneers of Spartanburg Methodist College. They played the first game at home on Monday of last week and then traveled to Spartanburg, SC on Saturday for the second game.
Game 1
In a thrilling nonconference basketball game at Mount Vernon, the Brewton-Parker College Lady Barons emerged victorious, defeating the Spartanburg Methodist College Pioneers with a dominating score of 73-57. The game on November 18, 2024, saw the Lady Barons explosive second half performance to carry them
to victory. The Lady Barons, who now hold a 4-3 record, found themselves a narrow lead at halftime with a score of 36-34. However, under the guidance of Coach Steve Edwards, they ramped up their defensive efforts and extended their lead in the late stages of the game. Notable performances came from Angel McRae, who led the scoring with 19 points and also contributed a significant 11 rebounds and 6 steals. Destanee Wright added 14 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals, and 4 assists, while Cori Keats chipped in with 15 points, 1 rebound, and 3 assists.
'It's always important for us to protect home court. We were able to do that tonight,' Coach Edwards commented after the game. 'We are going through some growing pains as a new group. If we want to be a legit contender, we have to improve our ball control and finishing around the basket,' His strategic focus reflects a determined and continuous improvement mindset within the team.
Game 2
In a dominant display, the Brewton-Parker Lady Barons emerged victorious against Spartanburg Methodist College's Pioneers, securing a substantial 84-58 win on November 23, 2024, at Bridges Arena in Spartanburg, S.C. The Lady Barons, led by standout performances from Andranique Stewart, Destanee Wright, and Chasity Degale, established an early lead with a halftime score of 47-36. Stewart was particularly impressive, contributing 18 points and 13 rebounds, leading her team in both scoring and rebounds. Wright and Degale added 12 and 11 points, respectively, solidifying Brewton- Parker's offensive efforts. Other notable contributions came from Tia Floyd, who managed 10 points and 4 rebounds, adding to the team's overall strength.
Coach Steve Edwards praised his team's efforts, especially in the second half, which saw the Lady Barons tighten up their defense. ' We defended really well in the second half. We held them to 10 points in the third and 12 in the fourth. I like the effort we are giving on both sides of the ball. We need to clean up a few things in order to take that next step. This group allows me to coach them hard and I like the way each player is responding,' Edwards said.
The victory boosts the Lady Barons' record to 5-3, including a 1-0 start in their league. As they prepare to face the College of Coastal Georgia in Brunswick, Ga., on November 26, the Lady Barons look to build on their current momentum and further improve their season record.
