The United States Post Office in Mount Vernon will officially be renamed after Second Lieutenant Patrick Palmer Calhoun, as a bill to change the name of the facility was signed into law on May 7.

The bill was sponsored by Congressman Rick W. Allen (GA-12) and passed the House of Represen- tatives in October 2023, and passed the Senate last month. The legislation honors Second Lieutenant Patrick Palmer Calhoun – a Mount Vernon native who served in the military as a Rotary Wing Aviation Unit Commander and was shot down under enemy fire in South Vietnam in the Spring of 1965. The building will soon don this new name as it pays tribute to the fallen soldier.

According to Allen, this renaming honors a true hero of not only his hometown, but his nation. 'Second Lieutenant Patrick Palmer Calhoun was an American patriot, Vietnam veteran, and born leader who couldn't be more deserving of having his name displayed on the U.S. Post Office in his hometown of Mount Vernon, Georgia,” he remarked. 'His heroism and ultimate sacrifice in service of our nation will never be forgotten. I am proud that we were able to get this legislation across the finish line to officially rename this facility the Second Lieutenant Patrick Palmer Calhoun Post Office.”
