BPC Sweeps Savannah State

Brewton-Parker College Softball defeated NCAA DII Savannah State (Ga.) at home on Tuesday afternoon in a pair of games in Mount Vernon. Brewton-Parker (14-8) swept the Tigers (9-17), beginning with a 7-0 victory in game one and closing with 7-5 win in game two.

Game 1

The Lady Barons started the game off with a single and two stolen bases from Alexis Bradshaw for good scoring position. Bradshaw gave BPC a 1-0 lead from a sacrifice fly from Destiny Lucas.

In the second inning, Taylor Elliott picked up a single and advanced to second from a wild pitch. Elliott advanced to third with a single from Chloe Strickland and scored off a throwing error on a throw-down play at second base.

Brewton-Parker increased their lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the third with singles from Lucas and Tori Wright and a two-RBI double from Elliott. After a scoreless fourth inning, Bradshaw and Lucas picked up singles and were brought in from a two-RBI double from Wright to increase the Lady Barons’ lead to 6- 0.

Wright scored the seventh run for BPC after Elliott reached first on a fielding error from the Tigers. Brewton-Parker held Savannah State scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings to secure a 7-0 victory.

Brewton-Parker led 10-4 in total hits with Bradshaw leading with three hits and two runs, while Lucas and Wright had two hits and two runs each. Elliott picked up two hits and one run, while Strickland gathered one hit. Natalie O’Neal (9-5) pitched five innings and produced three strikeouts while giving up one walk and three hits. Maeleigh Burns pitched two innings and produced one strikeout and gave up a hit.

Game 2

Brewton-Parker started game two with a single from Bradshaw before she advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Lucas and scored on a throwing error from the Tigers. Wright and Alyssa Usrey reached before hits from Elliott and BryAnn Pound brought them home. To finish out the opening inning of the game, Ashley Wilson brought Pound home with a single to give the Lady Barons a 4-0 advantage.

In the top of the second, SSU closed the gap with a series of hits to score two runs and held BPC scoreless in the bottom of the second. After reaching first on an error in the third inning, Gracie Neal was brought home by Wilson with a double to center field to make the score 5-2. In the fourth inning, Lucas picked up a hit and made her way around the bases to score off an RBI from Usrey.

Savannah State gathered some momentum in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs off four hits to make it a one-run ball game. In the bottom of the sixth, Lucas gathered a single and scored off a double from Hannah Rust. After holding the Tigers in the seventh, BPC completed the sweep with a 7-5 win.

Brewton-Parker finished the game behind 12-10 in hits. Lucas led the team with two hits and two runs, while Bradshaw, Wright, and Pound had one hit and one run each. Wilson picked up three hits, while Rust and Elliott gathered one hit. Neal and Usrey scored one run each as well. Burns pitched the first two innings, producing one strikeout and giving up two runs on four hits. Kira Altman (5-4) picked up the win and pitched four innings. Altman gathered three strikeouts while giving up seven hits and three runs. O’Neal closed the game, gathering one strikeout and allowing one hit.
