Since November, the Toombs County 4-H BB team has been practicing and preparing for the district qualifier. Every Thursday, the team worked on shooting positions, concentration, and knowledge of shooting safety all in hopes of being that best team at the district match.

On March 23, 2024, youth from across South Georgia met in Lyons for the Georgia 4-H District BB Qualification Match. Nearly 100 participants from eight counties shot at the match. Toombs County 4-H had three teams and a total of 20 youth at the shoot. An individual score of 310 out of 400 is required to qualify for the state match. A team score of 1550 is required for a team to qualify for the state shoot. 14 out of 20 Toombs County Youth qualified for state. Toombs County had two teams of seven individuals each that qualified for the state match. Toombs Red team consisted of Landon Woodfin, Kami Winn, Rachel Salter, Reba Salter, Tilly Baker, Lana Kate Sellers, and Payton Maldonado. Toombs Blue team consisted of Jacob Moran, Gavin Simpson, Kale Helmly, Gatlin Rushing, Kyler Riner, Cooper Hardman, and Caleb Crawley. Both teams as a team shot a high enough score to qualify for state. Toombs Red Team placed 4th overall out of ten teams. Jacob Moran received 5th place individual shooter in the standing position.

Toombs Purple Team consisted of Heather Emanuelson, Gavin Thompson, Isaiah Norfleet, Carmen Guerrero, Abigail Carey, and Vadyn Walker. The Toombs Purple team did not advance to the state competition, However, each of the individuals worked hard and improved tremendously from the beginning of the season.

The state match will be held April 27 at Rock Eagle 4-H Center in Eatonton, Georgia. There is still much work to be done for the Toombs Team, and members who qualified will continue to practice every week until the contest.

The Georgia 4-H Shooting Awareness, Fun and Education Program (S.A.F.E.) is sponsored by The Georgia 4-H Foundation. The Toombs County program is in its twelfth year. The team is coached by Project S.A.F.E. Certified Coaches Brett Copeland, Lori Copeland, and Jonathan McGahee, and helped tremendously by parents and volunteers. The Toombs County 4-H Program is under the coordination of Cheryl Poppell, Extension Coordinator and Riley Wimberly, 4-H Educator.
