Wheeler Takes 2 From Devils

The Wheeler County High School Bulldogs baseball team got two of three games in against the Red Devils of Hawksinville last week in a Region series. The Bulldogs won both of the games as they improved their record to 10-1 on the season and 5-0 in Region play.

Game 1

Wheeler took the lead in the bottom of the first inning when Walker Bridges drove in a run on a fielder's choice. Rhett Rodgers followed that with an RBI single, and then Layton Horne drove in a run with a triple. Danyon Hayes also drove in a run with a single as Wheeler took a 4-0 lead. Wheeler added a run in the second inning off a ball hit by Drew Dixon for a 5-0 lead.

The Devils got on the board in the top of the third inning with three runs to close the lead to 5-3. In the bottom of the third inning, Wheeler extended their lead off hits by Kyler Stinson and Kolt Bell in the bottom of the inning for a 7-3 lead.

Wheeler scored four more in the fourth inning to take an 11-3 lead. Hawkinsville plated three in the fifth and one in the top of the sixth inning to close the lead to 11-7, but Wheeler scored one more in the sixth inning on the way to a 12-7 victory.

Game 2

The second game of the series was a close one as Wheeler came out on top by just one run. Wheeler loaded the bases in the top of the first inning, and a walk to Dixon put the Bulldogs on top 1-0. Hawkinsville answered in the bottom of the inning with three runs to take a 3-1 lead over the Bulldogs. But those were the only runs that the Devils scored in the game.

In the top of the fifth inning the Bulldogs tied the game up off a triple by Scott and a single by Bell. And in the top of the sixth inning, Stinson came through with an RBI single to put the Bulldogs ahead, 4-3.

Wheeler held in the sixth and seventh innings to win the game, 4-3.

The third game of the series was called due to weather and will be made up at a later time. This week Wheeler has a series against Dooly County. They played a double header on Tuesday after presstime. Wheeler will play Montgomery County on Wednesday at home at 5:30 p.m. and then wrap up the Dooly series on Thursday at home at 6:00 p.m.
