Wilcox Over Treutlen, 39-36

After getting their first win in 19 tries last week, the Treutlen County High School Vikings football team almost went back-to-back as they faced off with the Patriots of Wilcox County. Treutlen was at home on Friday and came up just short as they fell 39-36 in the heartbreaker.

Wilcox went for an onside kick to start off the game and recovered it, setting them up with good field position to start things off. The Treutlen defense, though, stood up and came up with an interception by Jake Brooks.

On the first play for the Vikings offense, Kolby McLendon took the ball around the edge and was off for a touchdown from 80 yards out. Treutlen added the twopoint conversion to take an 8-0 lead.

Treutlen's defense made a goal line stand on the Patriots' next possession to take the ball over on downs inside their own 5-yard line.

Treutlen went back to work and were quickly on the board against. This time quarterback Cooper Brantley found DeMichah Williams for an 80yard touchdown run. Treutlen did not get the two-point conversion as they were now up 14-0.

On the Vikings' next possession, Brantley found Jondan Coney for a 35-yard touchdown strike. They missed the PAT, but now led 20-0.

Midway through the second quarter, the Patriots got on the board on a 14-yard run. They added the extra point to cut the lead to 20-7. Then just before halftime Wilcox scored again, this time on a short run to close it to 20-13 at halftime.

Early in the third quarter, the Patriots found the end zone again, this time on a 15-yard run. They added the extra point to tie the game at 20- 20.

With six minutes on the clock, the Vikings were in for a touchdown on a Williams run from 8 yards out. They added the two-point conversion for a 28-20 lead over Wilcox.

Wilcox scored their next touchdown on a 47yard pass play with 4:40 left in the third. That pulled them to within one point, 48-47. Wilcox scored again as time ran out in the third quarter. They took it in from six yards out. They failed on the two-point conversion, but were not on top 3328.

In the fourth, Wilcox scored again with just over seven minutes left in the game on a short run. That pushed the lead to 39- 28.

Treutlen kept pushing and were back into the end zone on a 69-yard strike from Brantley to Coney. They added the two-point conversion to make it a 1-possession game, 39-36.

Treutlen went for an onside kick, but did not come up with the ball. That sealed the win for Wilcox, and a tough loss for the Vikings The Vikings are now 1-5 on the season 0-1 in Region play as they head to Vienna to face the Dooly County Bobcats this Friday night in another Region contest. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
