The Toombs County High School cross country teams opened their season at the Peach State Preview last Saturday in Hazlehurst. Both groups had solid season starts, finishing in the middle of the pack in team scoring.
For the girls, Mareli Luna placed 21st out of 97 runners, running a 25:30. Newcomer Aubrey Gay was 34th overall, with a 27:06. Just behind her was Noelia Nevarez with a 27:07. Deanna Gonzalez and Josseline Zamorano finished out the top 5 for the girls.
On the boys' side, freshman Juan Luna posted a 18:35, good for 9th overall, out of a very strong field of 161 runners.
Coach Jeremy Moore said, “This is an early meet in the season, and we have a few weeks before our next meet. This meet gives us a chance to get good benchmarks for our runners, and will be especially helpful for some of our new runners. Considering the heat we are currently battling, I was pleased with the times we posted. We are still trying to get a few runners back from injuries, and hopefully some of those will boost our scores even more.”
