Freedom Rings In Alamo

The City of Alamo’s Volunteer Fire Department is getting ready to stage its 16th annual Fourth of July Celebration. As is customary, the event is scheduled for a weekend prior to the national holiday, so the fireworks will be breaking across Alamo’s skies on Saturday, June 24.

The festivities will begin at 2 p.m. as vendors and entertainment venues lining the park along Main A

Street in downtown Alamo open to visitors. Event Coordinator Shelia Chaney said everything from funnel cakes to wings and pork skins will be available to hungry festival-goers, and vendors will be selling a variety of wares including customized hats, woodcraft, candles, t-shirts and more. Children can enjoy activities ranging from a bouncy house to a ride aboard the “Jay Bird Express.” A display of antique tractors at the city park downtown is a fun attraction and a great place to stage a photo or two.

Throughout the day, entertainers will take the stage, including the Dusty Martin Band from Dublin and musicians Bill Woods and Brantley Attaway, who will perform Southern Rock and Country selections.

The fireworks will begin at dusk. Every year, the number of people drawn to Alamo for the spectacle increases. Crowds in the hundreds set up lawn chairs in the city’s rose garden and watch from the beds of pickup trucks lined up along the city’s business district on Railroad Avenue.

“People come from all over the area and even from outside the state —from places like Macon, Atlanta, even Florida,” Chaney said. “We think it is one of the best fireworks shows in the state.

Admission to the event is free and everyone is welcome. Proceeds derived from vendor fees will benefit the Fire Department by funding the purchase of service equipment and other needs.

Visitors are also invited to visit the Little Ocmulgee State Park in Wheeler County, just 10 miles away via U.S. Highway 280 and U.S Highway 441 where a number of activities are offered, including camping, hiking, picnicking, canoeing and fishing on the lake, playgrounds, as well as a lodge and restaurant.
