The first week of packing for Vidalia Onions will occur the same week as the Vidalia Onion Festival, making this year’s celebration a true beginning-of-harvest event.

The Vidalia Onion Commission has determined April 17 to be the best packing date this season; this determination is made based on the soil quality and weather in the area, and differs from year-to-year. Beginning this date, onions will be shipped to grocery stores across the nation, and will remain available until September.

Georgia Agricultural Commissioner Tyler Harper commented on the event. “It’s an exciting time for farmers and producers in our state and for consumers across the country as we look forward to enjoying the sweet onion once again,” he remarked. “The Vidalia onion has become a sought-after ingredient by professional chefs and home cooks alike, and we’re proud to grow them right here in Georgia.”
