The Brewton-Parker College men’s basketball team traveled to Montgomery, Alabama to take part in the SSAC Men’s Basketball Tournament with an opening-round contest against Life (Ga.) on Wednesday afternoon. The 10thseeded Barons (8-21) battled against the 7thseeded Running Eagles (19-9) in an 86-77 loss at the Multiplex at the Cramton Bowl.

Lance Smith broke free after the Barons won the tip to score the first bucket of the game, but the Running Eagles answered with two-straight layups of their own to claim their first lead of the contest. Five points from Kenny Colwell gave BPC a 7-4 lead with 16:49 left in the half with Life responding with six unanswered points, moving to a three-point advantage.

Brewton-Parker took control of the score with a lay from Aaron Udell and a jumper from Colwell to lead 11-10. After a score from Emmanuel Green at the 11-minute mark, the Running Eagles erased a chunk of time off the board with an 8-3 run to move to a 20-16 lead with seven minutes to play. Life followed up with a 14-4 run over the next five minutes of action, pulling away to a 14-point lead. Brewton-Parker wrapped up the half with seven points, highlighted by two threepointers from Udell to cut the deficit down to 34-27 at the break. Colwell led the scoring for BPC in the half with 12 points followed by Udell’s eight.

A trey from Colwell at the 18:49 mark cut the BPC deficit back to five points but the offensive production from the Barons remained rather stagnant for the first few minutes of the half. Life put together a 17-2 run to eventually claim a 20-point lead, leaving 14:11 on the clock.

After falling to a 21-point advantage twice, the Barons began to chip away at the Running Eagles’ lead with a 14-2 run moving the score to 59-50 with 9:25 to play which would be the closest the Barons would get to Life until the final seconds of the half. The Running Eagles managed to keep a double- figured cushion on Brewton-Parker leading as much as 16 points with 5:19 to play.

BPC was able to cut the lead back to under double figures with 11 seconds to play with a layup from Chance Hatcher, but it proved to be too late for the Barons to make a comeback effort. Life managed to hold off the Barons in the second half, outscoring Brewton-Parker 5250. Smith surged to a double-figure half with 12 points followed by Green’s 10 while Colwell and Hatcher both notched eight.

Brewton-Parker shot for 36.9% (24-of-65) from the floor, 26.5% (9of-34) from three, and 87% (20-of-23) from the charity stripe. Colwell led the way with 20 points followed by Smith’s 14 points, Udell’s 13 points, and Green’s 12 points. Damarcus Johnson Jr. led the rebounding efforts, snagging nine boards to help the Barons edge out the Running Eagles 37-33 off the glass.

Brewton-Parker gave up 13 turnovers while Life gave up 18. The BPC defense led 11-7 in steals, scoring 18 points off turnovers.

The Barons close out the season with an overall record of 8-21 and finished the regular season conference slate with a 6-14 record.
