The Toombs County High School MatDawgs hit the mats last Tuesday for the first home varsity event of the 2022-23 season as they hosted 6A #11 ranked Glynn Academy and 4A #3 ranked West Laurens. vs. Glynn

The MatDawgs beat Glynn Academy in their first matchup 48-35 going back and forth throughout the dual. A turning point in the dual seemed to be the 150 lb matchup where Agustin Cruz pulled out a thrilling pin to light a fire in the rest of the MatDawg lineup. Coach Allen said, “I was really excited for [Agustin] Cruz. He is one of the hardest workers in our practice room and showed a ton of fight in his match.” Other standouts during the dual were the two Senior leaders of the MatDawgs, Tank Morris and Wil Watts. Both came away in their Senior home opener with falls for the MatDawgs.

Picking up wins for the Bulldogs against Glynn Academy were Cameron Spivey Keon Robinson, Robert Bruce Agzigian, Dabvn Wadley, Agustin Cruz, Hayden Roy, Tank Morris, Wil Watts, and Brock Nobles. vs. W. Laurens

In their second matchup against West Laurens, the MatDawgs lost a nail-biter, 39-35. “We had some very good matches and some matches I thought we had a chance to win and didn’t,” said Coach Allen. “The nice thing is, it is November 29 and we have seen a lot of areas we can and will improve on.”

Getting wins for TCHS were Jahir Lopez, Spivey, Robinson, Agzigian, Morris, Watts, and Nobles.

The MatDawgs have an action-packed week ahead of them as they have a crew of younger guys heading to Camden Co. for matches on Thursday, and Varsity and JV will compete at the Yellow Jacket Duals and Stinger Slam at Jeff Davis High School this weekend. This is all gearing up for a highly anticipated 2nd Annual Rivalry Dual against Vidalia High School on Thursday, December 8 at home.
