Herons Defeat Bulldogs

The Toombs County High School Bulldogs were in Nahunta last Wednesday night to face off with the Blue Herons of Brantley County in a Region 3AA matchup. Toombs had the lead early, but Brantley pulled ahead and took the win. Brantley County put the first points of the game on the board as they kicked a 34-yard field goal with just over six minutes to play in the first quarter of the game. That put them on top 3-0 over the Bulldogs.

Toombs came back, and with under a minute left in the opening quarter, scored on an 18-yard run by Tamarien McArthur. Angel Morales added on the extra point to give the Bulldogs their only lead of the game, 7-3.

In the second quarter with three minutes to play the Herons capped off a drive with a 5-yard touchdown pass. They tacked on the PAT for a 10-7 lead over Toombs.

Toombs stalled on their first drive of the second half, and Brantley wasted no time in putting more points on the board as they connected on an 80-yard touchdown pass just 3:30 in to the third. They added the PAT to take a 17-7 lead over Toombs.

Early in the fourth quarter the Bulldogs closed the lead to 17-13 as they capped off a drive with a 1-yard run by quarterback Gavin Hall. The extra point was no good.

Brantley pushed their lead to 24-13 with a 24yard passing touchdown with five minutes left. Toombs managed to get a safety on the Herons with just over one minute to play, but after the ensuing free kick by Brantley, the Bulldogs threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown to make the final score 30-15.

Hall led the team with 155 passing yards in the game. McArthur added 132 yards on the ground, and Tank Morris rushed for 93 yards on just 9 carries.

This week the Bulldogs will host the Pirates of Appling County in The Pit on Friday night with the game starting at 8:00 p.m.
