Wheeler Tops Claxton

The Bulldogs football team of Wheeler County High School were in Claxton to take on the Tigers last Friday night and came away with a hard-fought win. That improves their record to 3-2 on the year, and they will kick off their Region schedule this week. The Tigers got on the board first with a touchdown early in the first quarter. Wheeler bounced back with a rushing touchdown with nine minutes left in the first quarter. They tacked on the extra point to tie the game at 7-7.

In the second quarter with just three minutes on the clock, the Tigers found the end zone again, giving them a 14-7 lead over Wheeler.

Wheeler scored late in the first half with under a minute on the clock. They tried to take the lead with a two-point conversion, but that failed so they trailed Claxton 14-13 heading into the locker rooms for halftime.

Wheeler went on top 19-14 on the Tigers, and then had to fight over the remainder of the game to pull out a 25-20 win.

Wheeler controlled the clock throughout the game as they rushed for 430 yards. Jason Culver went for 209 yards and Alvin Ricks rushed for 200 yards.

The offensive line of Bryce Miller, JT Gillis, Jordan Bridges, Walker Bridges, and Owen Stokes were named the line of the week for the entire state by Georgia High School Football Daily.

This week Wheeler will be on the road at Dooly County to take on the Bobcats in their first Region game of the season. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
