Montgomery County Eagle Academy elementary school students had the chance to learn about local government through hands-on experience as the group traveled to the Montgomery County Courthouse, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department, and Montgomery County Tax Commissioner’s Office.

This group of students is comprised of 1st-5th grade gifted and high achieving students who have been discussing government, rules and laws.

During their field trip, students were able to tour the facilities and gain a greater understanding for what each elected official does. They were also able to review artifacts from Montgomery County’s past within the display cases in the Courthouse. “We are always open to the children of our community, and look forward to their visits,” Sheriff Doug Maybin explained. Clerk of Superior Court Tammy Foskey, Probate Judge Rubie Nell Sanders, Magistrate Judge Ashley Thornton, and Tax Commissioner Loretta Lane shared similar sentiments, all explaining they enjoy being able to work with the students within the community.

ENTERING THE VAULT – Students learned about the duties of local government employees as they visited the offices of Clerk of Superior Court Tammy Foskey, Magistrate Judge Ashley Thornton, and Probate Judge Rubie Nell Sanders at the Montgomery County Courthouse. Judge Sanders also showed the students the courthouse vault, which holds vital documents. Above, she prepares to bring the students into the vault.

DISCUSSING TAXES – Tax Commissioner Loretta Lane explains to the students her role in government and the daily tasks that she accomplishes.

REVIEWING ARTIFACTS – One of the most popular activities during the field trip was reviewing the Courthouse’s historic artifacts in the display cases.
