Public Hearings Slated On Proposed Tax Hike
The Toombs County Board of Education has announced its intention to increase the 2022 property taxes it will levy this year by 5.11 percent over the rollback millage rate. All concerned citizens are invited to the public hearings on this tax increase to be held at the Toombs County High School, 500 Bulldog Road, Lyons, on August 25 at 5 p.m. and September 1 at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.
A statement from the Toombs County Board of Education explained that each year, the Board of Tax Assessors is required to review the assessed value for property tax purposes of taxable property in the county. When the trend of prices on properties that have recently sold in the county indicate there has been an increase in the fair market value of any specific property, the Board of Tax Assessors is required by law to redetermine the value of such property and increase the assessment. ment. When the total digest of taxable property is prepared, Georgia Law requires that a rollback millage rate must be computed that will produce the same total revenue on the current year's new digest that last year's millage rate would have produced had no reassessments occurred.
The budget tentatively adopted by the Toombs County Board of Education requires a millage rate higher than the rollback millage rate which is actually lower than the 2021 millage rate of 14.612; therefore, before the Toombs County Board of Education can set a final millage rate, Georgia Law requires that three public hearings be held to allow the public an opportunity to express their opinions on this increase.
“We hope our property taxpayers understand that unless your property has been reassessed (taxable value increased) during the year then you will not see a tax increase. Your school taxes will actually be less,” the Board stated in a press release.
