Mrs. Betty Tapley

Mrs. Betty Rushing Tapley, age 84, of Lyons, died on Thursday, March 10, 2022, at Community Hospice House in Vidalia after an extended illness. Mrs. Tapley was born in Savannah and moved to Lyons as a child. She was a 1955 graduate of Lyons High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Georgia Teachers College and a Master’s degree in Education from Georgia Southern College. She began her teaching career in Jeff Davis County, and also taught in Barrow County, Ben Hill County, and Brewton-Parker College until retiring from Lyons Senior High School after 30 years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Lyons, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, and Georgia Retired Educators Association. She was preceded in death by her parents, D.C. Rushing and Alma Dukes Rushing; and her sister, Shirley Rushing Stanley.

Her family includes her husband of 64 years, Duston Tapley, Jr., of Lyons; 3 children, Rushing Tapley Stephens and husband Dirk of Vidalia, Duston Tapley III of Lyons, and Jay A. Tapley and wife Valerie of Vidalia; 6 grandchildren, Randi Colvin and husband Jake of Metter, Ryan Brooks of Vidalia, Denton Tapley and Carston Tapley of Lyons, Abigail Tapley and Emma Tapley of Vidalia; 2 greatgrandchildren, Ryan Ireland and Riley Colvin; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service was held on Sunday, March 13, 2022, at 3:00 p.m., at First United Methodist Church of Lyons, with Pastor Randall Smith officiating. Burial followed in Lakeview Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Duston Tapley III, Ryan Brooks, Denton Tapley, Carston Tapley, and Jake Colvin Flowers will be accepted or memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 71, Lyons, GA 30436.
