BPC Takes On Shawnee

The Brewton-Parker College baseball team took on Shawnee State out of Ohio last week. The Barons picked up a win on Friday but then fell in both games of a double header on Saturday to the Bears.

Friday

Brewton-Parker baseball opened its weekend series against Shawnee State (Ohio) with a 13-4 win on Friday night. The Barons (4-11) downed the Bears (3-6) to open the three-game homestand.

The Barons struck early with six runs in the bottom of the first inning. BPC recorded just two hits but was able to take advantage of the Bears’ pitching miscues with three batters getting on base due to being hit by a pitch. Brewton-Parker had more scorers in position but left three on base. Shawnee State responded with two runs in the second inning before holding BPC to a quick three outs. The Bears tacked on two more in the top of the third to move the score 6-4 in favor of the Barons. However, BPC took advantage of some more mishaps from SSU, scoring four runs on one hit and two errors.

The fourth, fifth, and sixth innings were closed out with scoreless efforts as Shawnee State was the only team to muster up a hit in the fifth inning. BPC’s bats caught heat in the seventh with the Barons gathering two runs on three hits. In the bottom of the ninth, BPC was able to add one last run on one hit to seal the 12-4 victory. Both teams recorded seven hits for the game with Jackson Smith leading with three. Mackenzie McDowell led the way with three of BPC’s 11 RBIs. A total of five Barons recorded two runs apiece. Defensively, Jackson Smith recorded 14 putouts followed by Drew DeMasi with eight. BPC gave up three errors while SSU gave up five. Ty Cook started on the mound throwing for seven innings. He gave up all seven hits and four runs while striking out 11 batters. Trey Jones closed out the game throwing for two innings, striking out four batters.

Saturday BPC closed out its weekend series against Shawnee State with a pair of games on Saturday afternoon. The Barons (4-13) dropped both games on the afternoon against the Bears (5-6) with a 6-4 loss and a 5-1 loss, respectively.

Game 1

The opening game of Saturday’s pair of games opened with scoreless efforts in the first two innings of play. SSU found one hit in the first inning, leaving one on base while BPC recorded a hit in the second while also leaving no one behind. Scoring kicked off in the third inning as Shawnee State managed to find five runs on four hits in the top half of the inning. The Bears gathered a three-run homer as well as a two-run homer in the inning. Brewton-Parker responded with two hits and two runs in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 5-2. Both Ethan Frasca and Zach Wilson scored with Tony Rudolph and Wilson picking up a single each. The Bears answered right back in the top of the fourth inning with a solo run scored off two hits to move the lead to 6-2. The Barons were able to score two runs on two hits and an error in the bottom of the sixth inning to knock the deficit to just two runs, down 6-4. BPC managed to hold off the Bears in the final inning but could not enough offense in the seventh to produce a lategame comeback performance.

Shawnee State narrowly outhit Brewton-Parker, 8-6. Malik Germany led the Barons with two hits and one of the four runs scored. Taz Worrell, Wilson and Fracsa were the other scorers for BPC. Defensively, Jackson Smith recorded six putouts followed by Mackenzie Mc-Dowell with five. Matt Hager started the game and threw for two innings. He gave up four runs on three hits. He struck out three batters in the process. Austin Visocchi threw for the final five innings, allowing five hits and two runs. He struck out two batters and walked two in 20 at-bats.

Game 2

Game two resulted in little offensive production for Brewton-Parker. Shawnee State opened the game with a two-run homer over center field to make an early 2-0 lead. SSU gathered three hits in the second but left all three runners on base with BPC leaving two runners on base off one hit in the bottom half of the inning.

The third inning closed out scoreless for both teams. The Bears added another run in the fourth inning with a solo shot over centerfield for the second home run of the game to lead 3-0. Shawnee State tacked on another run in the fifth inning off two hits and an error to move to a four-run lead.

SSU tacked on one final run in the top of the sixth inning off two hits to move the lead to five runs. BPC answered with just a run in the bottom half of the inning to move the score to 5-1. Unfortunately, the seventh inning closed in a scoreless affair solidifying the 5-1 win for the Bears. Shawnee State outhit Brewton-Parker 13-3 in game two. Rudolph, Smith, and Frasca all gathered a hit each with Frasca earning the lone run for BPC. Drew De-Masi gathered eight putouts with Rudolph and Germany recording three assists each.

Three pitchers made mound appearances with Chandler Koerner opening with one inning pitched. He allowed five hits and two runs on eight at-bats. Mc-Dowell pitched for five innings, allowing seven hits and three runs while striking out three batters. Jered Marrs closed out the game with an inning pitched. He gave up just one hit on four at-bats. Brewton-Parker is scheduled to return to play this weekend with a threegame series against Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.).
