BPC Softball Sweeps Cleary

In a mid-week doubleheader, the Brewton-Parker College softball program returned home to Mount Vernon to host Cleary (Mich.) on Wednesday afternoon.
The Lady Barons (6-6) swept the Cougars (4-8) with a 7-5 win in game one and a 9-1 win in game two.
Game 1
The Cougars opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning to lead 2-0. The Lady Barons answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning to capture the lead, 4-2. Both MacKenzie Tripp and Alexis Bradshaw were able to score off a two-RBI double from Abbey Flowers before Flowers crossed the dish from a two-run homer from Olivia Whitt.
Brewton-Parker added three additional runs on three hits in the bottom of the second with Abby Cox, Chloe Strickland, and Tripp scoring. Both teams were held scoreless in the third inning before Cleary managed to find its third run of the day with a solo score in the fourth to move the score to 7-3.
After a scoreless fifth inning, the Cougars managed to find a run in the sixth and the seventh inning to close out the game, 7-5.
Cleary notched 12 hits while Brewton-Parker picked up just seven. Individually, Flowers led with two hits and three RBIs while Whitt notched a homer and two RBIs. Tripp led with two runs scored. Defensively, Josalin Whitten recorded 11 putouts with Alexia Mays and Natalie recording three assists each. Hardy threw for all seven innings, giving up four earned runs, walking one batter, and striking out four on 30 at-bats.
Game 2
In game two, both teams split the first inning with a run each. BPC picked up the lone run as Strickland doubled to bring in Bradshaw. The Lady Barons added five runs on four hits as Bry- Ann Pound, Whitt, Strickland, Bradshaw, and Tripp crossed home.
Both teams saw scoreless efforts in the third and fourth inning before BPC closed out the game early with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, to win 9-1. Pound, Whitt, and Cox all scored in the inning with Cox coming home off a walk-off double from Strickland to enforce the eight-run run-rule.
BPC’s bats produced a total of 11 hits versus CU’s five. Cox and Strickland led with three hits apiece while Strickland led with three RBIs. Bradshaw, Pound, and Whitt all led with two runs each. Madisen Nelson notched 10 putouts with Whitt recording three assists. Laykin Brown picked up the win from the circle, throwing all five innings. She stuck out one batter and walked one as well on 20 at-bats.
The Barons move to 6-6 on the season and returned to play on Tuesday, March 1 against Paine (Ga.) at home after presstime.
