Lyons Primary School transformed into a café as young students learned work and life skills by serving teachers, administration, and members of the community with a coffee bar on Friday. Six Pre-K through 2nd grade members of Courtney Edenfield’s class participated in the event as baristas, as they made and sold coffee and hot chocolate. This activity has become an annual event for the class, as this is the third year that it has occurred.

Toombs County Special Education Director Sabrina Woodruff commented on the event. “Toombs County School System is proud of our young baristas who participated in a hands-on learning project and entrepreneurial coffee bar operation in the school setting,” she remarked. “The students ran their coffee shop like a real-life business. Proceeds from this fundraiser will buy classroom supplies for Mrs. Edenfield's students. We are thankful to all who supported this project.”

Greater Vidalia Chamber President John Koon provided the students with the Young Entrepreneur Award, for which they each received a certificate.

Koon spoke on the event. “It's a privilege to be able to honor these young entrepreneurs. We at the Greater Vidalia Chamber are always excited when young people take an interest in learning about business and in learning what it takes to be successful in business and life,” he explained. “If we can reach them at a young age and teach them about work ethics, resources that are available, and responsibility not only at work, but also at school, and at home, then we have someone who can stay in or come back into our community and be successful.”

The event raised over $800 which will be used for supplies for Edenfield’s classroom. The school hopes to continue this annual event for many years to come.
