MCHS Takes 2 From Wheeler MCHS Takes 2 From Wheeler

The Montgomery County High School Eagles and the Wheeler County High School Bulldogs baseball teams faced off for a Region series last week with the Eagles taking two of three games.

Game 1

The first game of the series was on Tuesday of last week in Mt. Vernon. Both teams held in the first inning, but in the top of the second the Bulldogs got something going. A single up the middle started things off for Wheeler, and then two wild pitches moved the runner around to third base. A fielder's choice brought in a run for the Bulldogs to give them the early lead, 1-0.

In the bottom of the third inning MCHS went with Gavin Fennell on base Chase Cardell ripped one up the middle that scored Fennell to make it a 1-1 tie. Then Kelvin Williams hit an RBI single as they Eagles went on top 2-1. Williams stole second and third and scored on a wild pitch for a 3-1 MCHS lead.

Montgomery added a run in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings as the Eagles picked up the 6-1 win over Wheeler.

Game 2

In the second game of the series on Friday as part of a double header in Alamo, the Eagles ran away with the win. MCHS took the lead in the top of the third inning with three runs. Wheeler plated one in the bottom of the frame, but the Eagles answered with five more in the fourth inning to lead, 8-1.

MCHS scored seven more in the fifth inning to lead 15-1. Wheeler did pick up one more run in the fifth inning, but it was not enough as the Eagles won by the run rule, 15-2. MCHS was led by Andrew Weeks with four hits and Williams, Darrin Truett, and Wesley Hutcheson all had 3 RBI's for MCHS.

Game 3

In the final game of the week the Bulldogs scratched out a win, just their continued from page

third of the season. MCHS led the game in the top of the first inning with one run, before Wheeler tied it in the third inning.

The Bulldogs got one more run across in the bottom of the fifth inning as they came away with the win, 2-1, over MCHS. Cooper Hartley went the distance on the mound for Wheeler and got the win. He also had nine strikeouts in the game.

This week Montgomery will take on Treutlen County for their Regin series. The first game was on Tuesday after presstime. The two remaining games will both be in Mt. Vernon at 4:00 p.m., one on Thursday and then on Friday.
