Eagles Play Close Games

The Montgomery County High School Eagles basketball teams took on Wilcox County on the road on Tuesday of last week dropping both games, and then the boys played at Telfair County on Saturday, also losing that game.

Girls vs. Wilcox

In the girls game the Eagles got on the board first with a three-pointer and then took a 5-0 lead on a fast break basket by Makyla Bell. MCHS led 13-5 by the end of the first period. In the second Wilcox closed the lead to 14-8 but another three from MCHS made it 17-8. Wilcox went on a run to pull to within one at 18-17, but a three by Emeral James pushed the lead back to 21-17. In the third it was 22-20, MCHS, before a steal and basket by Bell put the Eagles up 24-20. But Wilcox came back and took the lead and were up 32-26. Bell added another three to make it 32-29. In the fourth the score was 42-36 with Wilcox on top. MCHS made a late run, but fell just short as they lost the game by just one point, 46-45. Bell led MCHS with 20 points, with Marley Bell and Kayrah Harris each adding 8 in the loss.

Boys vs. Wilcox

In the boys game it was also a close battle that went to overtime before the Patriots of Wilcox pulled out the win over the Eagles. MCHS led 12-11 at the end of the first period, but in the second Wilcox edged them out and took a 21-20 lead into halftime.

Wilcox outscored MCHS 20-14 in the third period to take a 41-34 lead to the fourth. The Eagles battled back to tie the game at 54-54 and send it into overtime. In the overtime period Wilcox did just enough to take a 64-63 win over the Eagles.

Montgomery was led by Dreon Jackson with 17 points, with Xavier Brantley and Jamari Mincey adding 16 points each.

Boys vs. Telfair

On Saturday the Eagles fell in McRae to the Trojans of Telfair. MCHS lost the game 64-59 in another close one. The Eagles were led by Mincey with 20 points, and Brantley posted 16.

This week MCHS hosted Dooly County on Tuesday after presstime and will be at Dublin on Friday with games starting at 6:00 p.m. Then on Saturday the Eagles will travel to take on rival Wheeler County at 6:00 p.m.
