Lions Roar Past Crusaders

It was another tough night for the Robert Toombs Christian Academy Crusaders football team as they traveled to Wilmington Island last Friday night to take on the Lions of St. Andrews. RTCA struggled to get the ball moving on offense as the Lions ran up the score and handed RTCA another loss.

St. Andrews got on the board early in the first quarter and were up 7-0 still with just over five minutes left in the first. RTCA did get a couple of first downs on a possession, but a big sack on the drive put them in a secondand- 18 situation. The Crusaders fumbled the ball and the Lions took over at the RTCA 34-yard line with two minutes left in the period.

The Lions hit a 23-yard pass on the first play and then a few plays later they were in for a touchdown. With 54 seconds to go in the first the score was 14-0. RTCA started deep in their own territory and on the first play they fumbled the ball. It was scooped up by the Lions and taken in for another touchdown. After the PAT it was 21-0. In the second quarter RTCA turned the ball over with a fumble with just over eight minutes to go in the first half. Later in the second St. Andrews worked the ball in for another touchdown with 3:32 to go in the half on a 16yard run. They added the extra point for a 28-0 lead.

RTCA tried to get something going, but was stopped at their own 29-yard line and turned the ball over on downs. On the first play the Lions connected on a touchdown pass to make it 35-0 after the extra point with 1:38 let in the first half. RTCA quarterback Rob Moore did connect with Andrew Tuck for a 38-yard pass, but just a few plays later an interception gave the ball back to the Lions. The Lions just took a knee to run out the first half. With 10:34 left in the third quarter the Lions broke a long run for a touchdown as they went ahead 42-0. RTCA was just trying to get something going on offense over the remainder of the game and never punted, electing to try on every down to work on the offense. They did turn the ball over on downs at their own 29-yard line later in the third. That led to a touchdown with just over one minute to go in the third period, making the score 49-0. The Lions added three touchdowns in the fourth quarter as they ran up the score and took the win 69-0 over the Crusaders. RTCA played a make up game on Tuesday of this week after presstime against Edmund Burke Academy.

This Friday RTCA will have a much needed bye to keep working on their team. They will be back in action next Friday when they host Brentwood Academy for Homecoming.
