God's Storehouse is Open Regardless of what you've heard or been told, God's Storehouse is alive and well! There are rumors that we have shut down, but hopefully, after reading this article, the rumors themselves will be shut down, and we can move on with the business at hand. In 2000, we started to walk the street, particularly the areas around Everett Street. We would pray for people and give them something to eat and clothing to wear. This started to grow and later that year, we opened God's Storehouse on the corner of Everett and McIntosh Street. The next year we attended a Vidalia City Council meeting, and we explained our ministry and what we were doing within the community and the surrounding communities. We were also getting ready at that time to house people in 'The Jesus Inn' on McIntosh Street. I remember that everyone was excited about the venture that we had undertaken. Our mayor at that time, Ronnie Dixon, only had one question for us that night, 'What can we do to help you?' We thanked him and told him that we had plenty of support from the people around the community. Ronnie, along with his brother Bobbie, both became very supportive of us during those early years. Councilman Raymond Turner would come and walk through the facility to see what he could do to help on a regular basis, as well as Councilman Eddie Tyson and Vidalia's building inspector at the time, Jackson Posey. They were always there to help when needed. Our first board members were: Larry Cowart, Lynn Thompson, Reverend James Joyce, Sherri Adam and Reverend Vaughn Clark. They were vital in getting us through those initial years. We don't know what we would have done without them. Their wisdom and insight were invaluable to us. That was many years ago, 26 to be exact. There were a lot of people that helped us through the years who we also could not have done without. Judy Rewis, John Sprangel, Bob Smith, Linda Hilton, Matt Otis Williams, Betty Poole, Wanda Brand, and Hershel Mincey were some of the main ones that worked with us from the beginning, but there are so many more that it would take this entire edition of 'The Advance' to print them all. To say the years have taken a toll on all of us physically would be an accurate statement, but it's not the reason for the changes. We believe that God is changing our goals and moving us in a new direction. We will still be laboring in the ministry, feeding and clothing people, but there will be more emphasis on the spiritual aspect of people's lives. There are so many people out there that need spiritual help today, along with the physical. So, let me tell you about our status: - We will continue to have Bible Studies on the regular days and times. - We will continue to give out free clothing after each Bible study. - We will still be giving out free food, but only as it comes in, not on a regular basis. This means that we will only be able to give out food as people or organizations donate food. We are not purchasing food any longer to give out. - We need people and organizations to continue to support us, whether it is through food drives, private donations, or financial support. - There will also be some new things going on, which we will explain as we go forward. Most importantly, let me say that it has been a blessing to serve this outstanding community and work with so many good people. We appreciate all of you more than you will ever know. We have always operated on the kind and generous offerings of our friends in the community, and you have never let us down. We would ask you to please, now more than ever, continue bringing in those donations. They are what help us to continue to operate and go forward as we trust in the Lord to move us into His plans and purposes. And never forget: When economies fall and resources start to disappear, there is a God that will bring us, as well as you and your families, through the storms of life. This is the truth that we know! God's Blessings to all of you! We love you and are looking forward to continuing to serve with you!!
