Soperton Shifts Elections To County

The City of Soperton held a brief called meeting on Wednesday, August 13, at City Hall for the purpose of passing a resolution authorizing the Mayor to execute an intergovernmental agreement with the Treutlen County Board of Commissioners and Treutlen County Board of Elections and Registration in regard to continued from page

future city elections. The agreement will give authority to the county election board to conduct all city general, special and runoff elections. The county will also assume the responsibilities for overseeing the candidate qualifying process, absentee voting, early voting, and Election Day voting and election result certification.

It will be the City’s responsibility to provide the County with all information for all future elections. The City will also assist the County in updating voter lists and providing any other needed information.

The City will reimburse the County for all costs incurred for elections. If a city election is held in conjunction with a County, State or Federal election, the City and County will share those costs.

The council unanimously passed the resolution and the mayor stated he and the City Council believe it is in the best interests of the citizens of Soperton for the city to enter into such an agreement with the county as it will result in more cost effective and efficient city elections.

Mayor Koon stated, “The reason we’re doing this basically is it helps with the costs of our elections. The City will not have to pay the cost for training election officials and we won’t have to pay individuals to man the election polls. The county already has these people in place so it would just be cheaper and more efficient for them to do it.”
