Vikings Fall In Season Opener

It was a tough start to the season for the Treutlen County High School Vikings football team as they traveled to Lakeland to take on the Lanier County Bulldogs. Lanier was pretty steady throughout the game, while the Vikings struggled to get the offense going. Vikings threw an interception on their first possession of the game, which led to a touchdown by Lanier giving them a 7-0 lead. The teams then exchanged fumbles and then punts over the remainder of the first quarter.

In the second quarter a 15-yard touchdown pass by Lanier put them on top 14-0 with 10:42 left in the first half.

Tim Blair had a good return on the ensuing kickoff back across midfield. The Vikings worked the ball down in side the 20-yard line, but a penalty pushed them back, and they turned the ball over on downs on a fourth down play with 6:21 to go in the half.

Lanier quickly got the ball across the 50-yard line on a big pass play, but the Treutlen defense stood strong and held them there, taking the ball over on downs.

Treutlen again moved the ball down inside the 20-yard line, but were not able to get in for the score before the end of the first half of play. That sent the game to halftime with Lanier on top 14-0. In the third quarter Lanier added a field goal to go up 17-0. Later in the third on a broken play Lanier scored on a 38-yard pass to make the score 24-0. Blair came up with an interception early in the fourth quarter. The Vikings again worked the ball down the field and this time they punched it in on a 5-yard run by Qumar Jordan with 7:31 left in the game. The extra point was no good and the score was 24-6. Lanier added one more score in the game as they took the win over Treutlen 30-6.

Treutlen is off this week, and will play again next week at home against rival Montgomery County.
