Toombs County Libraries Pack Calendars With Activities

The Dr. Mark and Tonya Spivey and Nelle Brown Memorial Libraries have packed their schedules with numerous fun activities for patrons of all ages.

Special summer programming will welcome children, families, and community members of all ages to Southeastern Technical College throughout June, as the libraries come together to offer several fun and engaging programs to the community.

The Wild Wonders Animal Show will bring live creatures to the stage of Southeastern Technical College at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 10, as attendees have a chance to get an up-close look at these animals and learn more about them.

Chad Crews will simultaneously mystify and educate audiences through his magic show, which will take the stage at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 17.

The Magic Man Bill Packard will entertain the crowd with a mixture of music, comedy, and just plain fun during his show at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 24.

These shows are free and open to the public – you do not have to have a library card or be a patron of the library to come. Dr. Mark and Tonya Spivey Public Library The Dr. Mark and Tonya Spivey Public Library will be bustling with activity throughout June, as the library hosts numerous events for patrons of all ages.

Adults (ages 20 and older) of all experience levels will gather to play Dungeons and Dragons from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3.

Children can enjoy playing against one another in both virtual and board games during the Game Time! program from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 4.

On Friday, June 5, Wiggles and Giggles will help the library’s youngest patrons to learn more through movement at 10:30 a.m.

Patrons of all ages can see and interact with the library’s composting bin and worm beds at 12 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, as a part of the Worm Weekends program.

On Monday, June 8, kids can take part in the Dino Stomp activity, which will kick off at 2 p.m. This flag football-like game requires participants to stomp around to pop others’ balloons while protecting their own balloons. Preregistration is required for this event and can be made by calling the library. Later on June 8, at 5 p.m., adults will meet for the Reverse Book Club, where they share about the books that they are reading with other fellow bookworms.

On Tuesday, June 9, a program for kids and by kids will unite children ages five years-old and under, as Gage Kelly leads story time at 11 a.m. Kids can complete building challenges during the Lego Club at 4 p.m., and can enjoy an artbased story time during Art and Tales at 4:30 p.m.

Teens can bring their laptops, phones, ipads, or other gaming devices to hangout with other gamers during the drop-in Nerds, Geeks, & Gaming Meet Up! Event from 1:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 10.

Patrons can show off their knowledge of the 1990’s pop culture during the 90s Trivia Night, which will kick off at 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 11.

On Friday, June 12, Wiggles and Giggles will help the library’s youngest patrons to learn more through movement at 10:30 a.m., then kids may enjoy a sweet treat while painting during the Cookies and Canvas event at 4 p.m. Cookies and Canvas attendees must preregister before the event by calling the library.

Patrons of all ages can see and interact with the library’s composting bin and worm beds at 12 p.m. on Saturday, June 13, as a part of the Worm Weekends program.

Community members can bring in photos and have them digitally preserved during the Ladson Scan Day from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Monday, June 15, at the Ladson Genealogical Library housed within the Dr. Mark and Tonya Spivey Public Library.

On Tuesday, June 16, The Teacher’s Paws Owner Donna Beall will read to the library’s youngest patrons during a story time event at 11 a.m., while kids meet for Lego Club later at 4 p.m. and can enjoy an art-based story time during Art and Tales at 4:30 p.m.

Adult Dungeons and Dragons enthusiasts will meet to play the game from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17.

Patrons will have another chance to showcase their knowledge of the 1990’s during the 90s Trivia Night at 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 18.

The library will be closed on Friday, June 19, and Saturday, June 20, in observance of Juneteenth.

On Monday, June 22, kids can test their skills and luck throwing hoops onto different types of dinosaur horns during the Triceratoss event at 2 p.m. Attendees of this event must preregister by calling the library. Also, on June 22, another session of 90s Trivia Night will kick off at 5 p.m.

On Tuesday, June 23, children, ages five and under, can enjoy having a book read to them during Story Time at 11 a.m., while kids meet for Lego Club later at 4 p.m. and can enjoy an art-based story time during Art and Tales at 4:30 p.m.

Kids can show off their creativity and paint a dinosaur piggy bank during an event at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24. Preregistration is required for this event and can be completed by calling the library.

The University of Georgia Athletic Association will bring historic artifacts and treasures from their archives for Georgia Bulldog fans to enjoy during the UGA Athletics In Your Town Traveling Exhibit, which will be displayed from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 25.

On Friday, June 26, Wiggles and Giggles will help the library’s youngest patrons to learn more through movement at 10:30 a.m.

On Saturday, June 27, adults can learn more about studying their genealogy during the Genealogy Basics program at 11 a.m. and patrons of all ages can see and interact with the library’s composting bin and worm beds at 12 p.m. as a part of the Worm Weekends program.

Adults will meet for the Sweet Onion Book Club at 5 p.m. on Monday, June 29. To learn more about the Club’s current book selection, visit the library’s circulation desk.

The Dr. Mark and Tonya Spivey Public Library is located at 610 Jackson Street in Vidalia, and is open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday. Nelle Brown Memorial Library The Lyons Welcome Center is continuing to provide limited library resources for patrons while the Nelle Brown Memorial Library is under construction for an extensive renovation, as the calendar of library events for the month was recently released. The Nelle Brown Memorial Library officially closed its doors to the public in January, as the library undergoes revitalization to improve the technology and facility. In the meantime, the Lyons Welcome Center, located at 124 NW Broad Street, has become stocked with computers and a small selection of books to continue to serve the public from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays.

In addition to this, the library and Welcome Center are partnering to offer a few story time and book club events throughout the month.

Lyons Police Chief Wesley Walker will read children a book during a story time event at the Lyons City Hall, located at 161 NE Broad St., at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 9.

Another Story Time will kick off at the Lyons Welcome Center at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 16.

An Adult Read Aloud event will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 22, at the Dream House, located at 109 Miot Street at Partin Park in Lyons.

Children may come hear a book be read during Story Time at the Lyons Welcome Center at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23.
